Apple Inc. has recently acquired the Canadian artificial intelligence startup, DarwinAI. This acquisition represents a strategic move by Apple to bolster its AI capabilities, especially in light of its forthcoming emphasis on generative AI in 2024. DarwinAI specializes in optimizing AI systems to be more compact and efficient, a focus that resonates with Apple’s commitment to on-device AI processing for privacy reasons, rather than relying solely on cloud-based solutions.

Following the acquisition, numerous employees from DarwinAI, including prominent AI researcher Alexander Wong, have transitioned to roles within Apple’s AI division. Wong now serves as a director within the group. The technology developed by DarwinAI, which includes AI for visual inspection in manufacturing, is poised to bolster Apple’s endeavors across various industries, particularly in advancing on-device AI applications.

Apple is gearing up to unveil a range of AI features with the release of iOS 18. These enhancements may involve an upgraded iteration of Siri and new AI functionalities integrated into Messages, iWork, Apple Music, and other services. Additionally, the company is incorporating AI technology into Xcode and its customer service operations.

CEO Tim Cook has alluded to significant advancements in generative AI from Apple in 2024, highlighting the transformative potential it holds for users. However, specific details regarding the financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed. Apple has adhered to its standard response regarding acquisition inquiries, affirming its occasional acquisition of smaller technology companies without divulging precise intentions or plans.
