Microsoft has embarked on a multi-year partnership with Mistral AI, a French startup renowned for its expertise in artificial intelligence. This collaboration aligns with Microsoft’s strategic vision to broaden its AI offerings on the Azure cloud computing platform, extending beyond its significant investment in OpenAI. As part of the agreement, Microsoft will integrate Mistral AI’s models into Azure and has also acquired a minority stake in the company. Mistral AI has garnered acclaim for its large language models (LLMs), akin to those pioneered by OpenAI, capable of comprehending and generating human-like text.
The first model to be available to Azure customers is Mistral’s proprietary model, Mistral Large. Hosted on Microsoft’s cloud platform, Mistral AI plans to expand its offerings to other cloud platforms in the future. Founded by individuals with prior experience at Meta’s artificial intelligence teams and Google’s DeepMind, Mistral AI brings a wealth of expertise to the partnership.
Microsoft’s investment in Mistral AI is substantial, with reports indicating a $2.1 billion commitment to support the startup’s commercial growth and market expansion. This investment will also fuel research and development efforts to create AI models tailored for public sector services in Europe. Moreover, Mistral AI is set to introduce “Le Chat,” a ChatGPT-style AI chatbot, as part of its product portfolio.
The partnership between Microsoft and Mistral AI comes at a pivotal juncture, as Microsoft faces regulatory scrutiny in Europe and the U.S. for its extensive funding in OpenAI. This strategic alliance underscores Microsoft’s dedication to offering diverse AI models to its customers while affirming its support for open-source AI platforms.
